Yes, I do think it would be better priced at around $3. Yes, the middle is clear and those are not buttons to push just pictures. And yes it does play just a few little tunes. But honestly, this allows your little one to use their imagination, which IMHO is what toys should be all about! :)
FYIit also comes with a ring that fits through a hole in the "screen" that can be attached to a toy bar, car seat handle, etc.My 6 month old was constantly drooling all over my iphone and I wanted to get something that looked enough like one we would be able to give it to him and he could be entertained. The nubby orange outer part is great for his teething and sore gums and he loves hearing the noises that the star makes.

I thought that all of the little buttons were going to work instead of just the star button so it would be more like mommy's and daddy's phones. But my son still loves it, and he dances to all the songs.Read Best Reviews of Learning Curve My Phone Musical Toy Here
For the price, I wasn't expecting a great toy but even so, it's low-quality. The main panel is CLEAR, not white as shown in the picture. So you can't really see the "buttons" on the front. The green star does play three cute noises when pushed. But, it does NOT light up, I thought it did. All in all, not a worthwhile purchase. When I bought this, I didn't read other reviews too closely, so I'm not sure if anyone else indicated that the icons on the "screen" are just pictures. I thought they were buttons that made noise. The green star button makes noise, but the toy doesn't light up. The orange edge is teething-friendly, and overall, this was a cute stocking stuffer and something nice to keep in my diaper bag.
