As the previous reviewer said, the "heartbeat" sound option isn't a heartbeat at all--it's really a song. In fact, all three sound options are essentially songs. As far as the volume, the pup has two settings, and when set on low volume, the bird calls etc. don't seem particularly loud or shrill to me.

One thing I really like about the pup is that each sound plays for 15 minutes after you press the corresponding button. The five-second playback mentioned by another reviewer only happens when you leave the pup in demo mode. (It comes out of the box this way.) To deactivate demo mode and switch to the full 15 minute playback, you have to open the battery case and press the appropriate button. The entire process is described in detail in the instruction manual. As long as you have a small screwdriver, you'll be good to go in about two minutes.

I chose this toy over the Sleep Sheep Jr. because it's colorful and has a more expressive face--which babies love. And frankly, I think it's far cuter than the sheep--but I love dogs, so I know I'm biased!

I am so glad that a purchased this toy, despite a few negative reviews. The negative reviews should be deleted off of amazon because the product was not defective but in "demo mode" as stated in instruction pamphlet. My 7 month old twins love this puppy he is a new favorite of theirs. Their faces light up every time they see him and they become very vocal. The songs are mellow, sweet and gentle. Cute face, cute songs, soft fabric... what more could you possibly want in a baby toy? Even my six year old says the songs are beautiful.

purchased this originally from Marshalls before my son was born, and he was born with issues and this is one of the items he has always had with him and he loves it and responds to it amazingly!

we bought this item for our second child. the "heartbeat" was just music, no heartbeat at all. the bird chirping on the nature setting was so loud and high pitched, there was no way it would soothe a baby. the final setting was actually nice, we used it for one day-then the entire toy stopped working. It was a total waste of money.
