I think he's attracted to the contrasting navy blue and white design of the penguin's head and he's very interested in the sounds the toy makes. Every time he hears the toy he looks for it and/or turns towards it. He loves trying to get a-hold of the toy which, because of it's size (a little bigger than a tennis ball) and wobbly nature, he can't quite grasp features which are encouraging him to scoot, crawl, and in general become more mobile!
The toy is VERY sensitive. The sound will activate with the slightest touch, and may activate if you walk past... Which isn't the best if you are carrying a sleeping baby. But, there is a (small) on/off switch.
Two important things to note before buying.
1. The batteries to this toy are NOT replaceable. I'm almost positive the person who gave this to me bought it at a Target and we received it with the battery protector intact. We've played with this toy for 4 months now and the sound is still strong.
2. The toy makes a variety of different sounds (like chimes, bells, and other fun and whimsical sounds) not the sound of the animal featured on the toy.
