The main problem I have is the shapes fit through a paper towel roll. From what I read, any type of toy/block..ect that fits through a paper towel roll is considered a choking hazard. This is a decent toy. Simple and inexpensive EXCEPT please beware that these shapes are indeed small and can become lodged in your childs mouth. If you let your young child play with this toy please watch your kid like a hawk!! Mine was able to put the triangle into his mouth where it actually became stuck, and so stuck that he was unable to get it out. Thank god I was standing over him and I was able to pull it out of his mouth in time. I noticed he was in trouble when he starting wimpering and I tried to get it out but it was stuck behind his teeth. The point of the triangle dug into the bottom of his gums as I yanked it out. :( It was a scary situation because the triangle actually wouldn't come out of his mouth and I slightly paniced and I basically had to use some force to remove it. Unfortunately this toy will be in the closet until he is much older. In the meantime we are playing with just the bucket sans shapes.
I just don't understand why they don't make the shapes larger?!

First of all, the top on this shape sorter is easy to get off, but it doesn't fall off, which was important to me. If it falls off, then the child won't be using the shapes to learn. It appears to be and feels like it is very sturdy, so will be useful for a long time seeing how babies love to carry these things around, putting things in and taking them out.Now for the bad news, the little shapes are too little. Except for the star and the triangle, the shapes will fall through a toilet paper tube making them too small and thus a hazard to the little one. You would have to keep a watchful eye while this toy is being used. That is my reason for only 4 stars. My son loves this shapes sorter, only one complaint (no, 2)... there aren't enough pieces and you know how little things get lost... so i had to buy a 2nd one just to feel like there were enough pieces. secondly, the lid is not very sturdy. But we still really like it.My 16 month old son really likes it. Compared this to other shape sorters and it is relatively the same. Read reviews about how the top comes off easily and it does, but my son just flips it over and likes to use it that way. It is simple and classic and actually keeps his attention!
