Safety 1st Temp Guard, Duck

Safety 1st Temp Guard, DuckAs others have mentioned, the word "hot" shows up at relatively cool temperatures on this duck--somewhere around 99 degrees(F)for mine. (How do I know? Because my baby bathtub came with a built in thermometer.) That's for a good reason. If you're a new parent you're probably not very good at judging the right water temperature for your baby (I wasn't) because their skin is much thinner and more sensitive than yours. Babies need a much cooler bath than you do. It's better to err on the side of too cool than too hot.

This duck disciplines you into keeping the bath feeling only lukewarm (not hot) until you get used to how baby's water temperature should feel. Once you've got the hang of it you've still got a cute ducky for baby to play with in the bath. Not a bad deal for less than the price of your morning latte.

This duck floats well. Cute. Decent size for little hands to hold. It doesn't have a hole at the bottom because it is replaced with a blue temperature sensor where the word HOT turns white if the water is hot. Water will not get into the duck, so there is no worry about water getting in and forming residue/mold. Downside is, the duck doesn't quack. Also the temperature sensor always show HOT even if the water is tepid. Well it's alright for me because I didn't care for the sensor, I just wanted a cute duck.

Buy Safety 1st Temp Guard, Duck Now

To use this product, you place the underside of the duck in water for a few seconds and then remove it to see if the word "HOT" appears in bold pink letters on the bottom. If it does, you can adjust the water temperature and try again. It is a very simple tool to use. It does not tell you if the water is too cold for a baby, so you might be better off to start warmer and then adjust down to lower temperatures. I personally don't think it is necessary to buy the more expensive bath thermometers because this does the job just fine. It is also fun to use as a floating bath toy!

Duckies are a classic bath toy for a reason, and my kid loves this one! The temp sensor on the bottom is too sensitive to heat, though -it reads "HOT" if the water's even a tiny bit above lukewarm. I don't even bother to use that feature anymore!

After searching around for a cute monkey that didn't have a human-esque face, I found this gem. It's nice and floppy, like a cuddly stuffed animal should be and when he pulled it out of his stocking his 1-yr old face lit up and he smashed into it in a massive hug.

Perfect.

VTech Jungle Gym Twist and Learn Gorilla Pals

VTech Jungle Gym Twist and Learn Gorilla PalsI loved the idea of this product because our 1-year old (20 month) son loves to watch his father workout and lift weights. I hoped that getting him a toy that would help him feel included in the workout would keep him occupied (and also out of daddy's way for safety reasons.) He will play with them for a while, but quickly loses interest. The toys are easy enough for him to turn on and off by himself, but frankly (like many toys) the sounds are annoying and even with a volume control switch (off/low/high) he always turns them up full blast. The toy is supposed to say "up," "down," and give directions like that, but it hasn't not proven to be a very useful teaching tool. It might be in our best interest to take the batteries out and just call them weights. I almost wish there was a better "pretend" weights/exercise set that would just be what it is without all the sound effects and such.

I also think that this toy would be better suited for younger toddlers, even though the box says 18+ months.

My son is two and loves playing with weights now that he has his own he enjoys them. Just wish they made noisecwhen he did curls instead of just shaking them

I came across this toy set when I searched for child dumbbells. No, I am not putting my 2-year-old through boot camp. I was looking because she feels left out when my husband and I use our Shake Weight in the morning. I decided to get these even though they are more toys than dumbbells. It's a good thing that I didn't invest too much in these, because my daughter lost interest in them in about 5 minutes and she never picked them up again. Perhaps they're more appropriate for 10-12 month old than for a 20 month old.

Corolle Babicorolle Babipouce Grenadine Doll

Corolle Babicorolle Babipouce Grenadine DollI bought this for my daughter just before she turned 2, and a year later it is still her favorite. The body is soft and cuddly, and she still has that sweet vanilla smell that all the Corolle babies have even a year later. My daughter takes it everywhere and sleeps with it. Very durableours has even been in the sandbox! Her little dress does come off and is washable. Her face cleans up easily too. We love this brand and are planning on adding Tidoo (the bath doll) to the family this year!

This doll is adorable, soft, and my two year old loves it!! I enjoy the nice smell of it's face. We haven't however been able to figure out how to get doll's thumb in her mouth. It just won't go in, let alone stay there. And I read a review that stated the dress comes off, but it is sewn together and won't go over dolls head. Other then that, we are pleased with this baby doll. I ordered the Grenadine because I like the bright colored clothing for a toddler. It can be played with outside and get a little dirty without showing the ware. Nice soft fabric and great deep colors! I also like the softer plastic that they use for it's face and hands because it isn't hard like other dolls we have purchase. This doll is over all a soft and durable play thing; it's good for sleeping with, and daytime play.

Buy Corolle Babicorolle Babipouce Grenadine Doll Now

First off, we love Corolle dolls. They are extremely well-made, and phthalate-free, which is a definite bonus. The scent is mild and very pleasant, and I normally don't like scented products -but the Corolle dolls' scent is really very gentle and nice.

This Babipouce doll is perfect for young toddlers. It is so squishably soft and huggable, and easy for baby to hold onto. It's great for parents too, because it's washable! Pop it in a zippered pillowcase, and toss it in the washer (and dryer). The scent will remain, and the clothes stay soft.

Our toddler has never bothered with trying to fit the doll's thumb in its mouth, and neither have we. While this might be an issue for some, it hasn't been at all for us. It's more about the great feel of this doll, and the way it so perfectly fits a toddler's size. It's soft enough to be a lovey at night, too. From the first time she saw it, our toddler would hug on her doll and hold it and love on it. It fits her so well. :)

The pink outer top does come off on ours, but the other clothes do not. Which is fine. We've bought a Calin for her for this Christmas, and she can play dress-up with it, but the Babipouce will definitely remain a favorite for years to come, because it is so utterly adorable. The doll's body is so soft (like a plush toy) but it has realistic-looking features, which makes it more appealing, I think.

Between our toddler and her older sister, we've gotten several Corolle dolls, and haven't been disappointed with any. If you're looking for the perfect starter baby doll, this is it. No, it doesn't talk, or walk, or play music, but it is a great companion and friend for any little one, and will last for years and years.

This was my daughter's first doll, given to her by her grandmother at one year old for Christmas. My daughter is my third child and now 7 1/2 years old. We also have two boys and have gone through our share of "lovies" all high end popular, durable toys. This is the only "lovie" that has not had to have a version 2,3,4, etc. "Rose" has had many trips in a pillowcase through the washer and into the dryer and now finally after 6 years, her clothes are wearing thin. The paint has worn a bit around the edges on her face and the chinchilla has chewed off a couple of her fingers, but she is still #1 with my daughter. Barbies and her 2 American Girl Dolls would be thrown under a bus before "Rose" would ever be put into harms way :) I cannot recommend Corolle Dolls highly enough!!!Especially this little gem!

Alexander Dolls 12' My First Baby - Love Birdie - Play Alexander CollectionI love Madame Alexander dolls. I've bought them for gifts since the 1970's... I had one when I was a girl. They are soft and cuddly. Just right for young children.

I abosolutely love this doll! It has a soft body, clothes that STAY ON (no dressing and undressing...so no chance to lose the clothes), and an adorable baby face. I would recommend this doll to anyone with little ones, and would definitely buy it again. The only thing that I don't like is the headband comes on and off. With a two year old, it came off and was lost fairly quickly. Other than that, I'm a happy customer!!

Wonderworld Puppy Car

Wonderworld Puppy CarThe Wonderworld Puppy Car looks very cute and bounces gently when it moves, which is fun, but the wood for the product is quite rough in spots. My baby at first liked chewing on this toy. One day she was chewing the car and started crying. After that she stopped chewing on it. My best guess is that she discovered one of these unpleasant rough spots in the wood. I wish that the body of the car was made a little better. It is also smaller than might be obvious by the photo, only a little larger than the palm of one's hand.

Shining Stars Hedgehog

Shining Stars HedgehogThese toys are soft and adorable! On top of that you're giving them a real star! How cool is that? Half of my grandkids are now planning to be astronauts! They use the Nasa site to check on their stars and usually end up widening their search. The teens and preteens really enjoy the game site. In addition to all this a portion of the profits goes to children's charities. I have rarely been happier with a gift I've purchased.

I had a hard time finding a really cute hedgehog for my grandchild and this one fit the bill. He is darling, not scary looking and really soft.

Nursing Necklace from Organic Cotton. Safe Teething. Breastfeeding Necklace by Barin Toys

Nursing Necklace from Organic Cotton. Safe Teething. White Cotton Breastfeeding Necklace by Barin ToysI was looking for a simple, non-toxic teether/nursing necklace for my son. Something for him to chew on while babywearing and something to give him to focus on/fiddle with while nursing.

This is cute, and comfy to wear.

It is plain. (I was thinking it'd go with everything I wear)

However, it's an awkward length. It falls right at my breast line, at my sternum. The problem with this is that it lies funny. I can't tuck it under my shirts because it gives me a weird shape in between my breasts, and to wear it out on top of my shirt it just...looks funny.

So I've resorted to carrying it in my diaper bag and basically using it as a toy when he's in the shopping cart, or I'll slip it over my neck when wearing him while out and about. But unfortunately I don't wear it like jewelry like I hoped I would.

My daughters love this! My 4 month old holds it all day long and when she sets it down my two yr old is on it like white on rice ... The only thing is that I wish it came in other colors because I'd buy them all. Love it love it love it!

Boon Odd Duck

Boon Odd Duck - JaneI bought Odd Duck Jane a couple of months back, she was the extra $5 I needed to spend to get free shipping on an order, and I was intrigued by the idea of a bath duck that didn't contain PVC. It seems almost all bath toys 'rubber' ducks especially are made of PVC. So, while most of our bath toys are unconventional, we do have the obligatory vinyl ducks made by the untrustworthy company Schylling. When my daughter developed a strong attachment to our scary vinyl ducks and wanted to carry them all over the house, I figured it was time to pull Jane out and give her a try.

She was an immediate hit: My daughter passed off all the old yellow ducks in favor of this brightly-colored, excitingly decorated alternative, and she's been carrying Jane around the house for days now. She's also been for a few swims in the bath without the leakage problem others have spoken of, so I guess we got lucky on that count. Jane measures about 4" long, has a weighted bottom so she will float nicely in water, and is even able upright herself if she is knocked over. Which is pretty cool; you'll never find her doing that dead-duck-on-her-side thing. She has a rigid non-pliable head and beak, and her body is somewhat squishy, though less so than a traditional PVC duck.

I noticed, on first opening the packaging Jane came in, an odd smell. Sort of like an uncapped Sharpie, and I immediately flipped her over to look for the recycling code. Nothing. No details on what plastic she's made of on the packaging either. Luckily the smell faded, and I who am extremely sensitive to smells can no longer detect it. Consider that I'm paranoid, so that's actually a point in this toy's favor.

I did, however, want to know what kind of plastic they made this toy out of since it is phthalate-free and PVC-free, so I asked.

Boon ducks are made of Styrene Ethylene Butadiene Styrene (SEBS), a subtype of synthetic rubber that was created by the Shell Oil Company in the 1960's and is marketed under the trade name Kraton-G (there's actually a Wikipedia article on this). It's used in everything from tires to medical devices and gloves, and of course increasingly in toys as a PVC alternative. Its main benefit, of course, being that it is pliable but does not require the use of the dangerous plasticizers that are used in the manufacture of soft PVC. It is known to have a strong odor, as I can attest, but Greenpeace in a 1996 article stated it was a viable and safer alternative to PVC. It does seem to be a safer alternative so far as we know at this time though I'm surprised how little real data exists on it, whereas you can find a wealth of information on many more commonly-used plastics. The Material Data Safety sheet documents this plastic as a low hazard in all areas.

While I don't think it's wise to trust a company (particularly one with China manufacturing Odd Ducks *are* made in China, like most things) just because they say that a product is minus known toxins (not all alternative plastics are created equal), in this case the alternative seems to be an improvement over the current standard.

The duck herself is sweet, and I'm glad to have a potentially less toxic option available, as bath duckies seem like one of those 'must-have' toys for little kids. I can certainly see collecting the others in the future, and would based on all current information available recommend these ducks to anyone wanting a safer bath toy for their children.

**UPDATE**:

We now own all the ducks (my youngest has taken a particular liking to them), and so I thought it would be worthwhile to comment on a few things.

1. The best floaters are Jane (pink) and Slim (blue). These ducks will always right themselves if tipped, and thus never float on their backs. Bob(orange) tends to float with his bill in the air, at a slight backward angle, and Squish (yellow) floats with his bill toward the water, at a slight forward angle. Both Bob and Squish can be upended, but Bob will most often right himself. With Squish it takes a bit more activity to upend him, but once he tips over, he's a back-floater.

2. The first Bob we ordered had completely separated from the weighted disk on his base during shipping. I'm confused, however, as to how some people's ducks filled with water underneath, as Bob's underside is still sealed. Nonetheless, Bob only floats on his back when he is minus-the-disk, so we wrote Boon and sent them a photo of our defective Bob (after all, my three-year old had actually done chores to earn money for Bob, and he's not cheap for a little duck). Boon's response was prompt, friendly, apologetic -and three days later a new duck arrived on our doorstep. So anyone who hesitates on the premise they might get a faulty duck? Fear not. Document it, and send it to Boon. This is one company who will stand by their products -and that is worth the extra money. Unlike a company(ex. Schylling) who I emailed about a defective product two months ago and *never* received a response from.

Bob has been a great tub toy for my soon-to-be 10 month-old. He "paddles" very smoothly and swiftly in the water, is fun to watch while twirling with the funky orange lines, and my son loves holding him down in the water and watching him pop up to the surface. Bob also gets chewed on quite a bit since my son's teething, so I like the fact that he's free of BPA, phthalates, PVC. We haven't had any issues with smell, or water getting in Bob. Definitely a good buy, and we'll be adding another Odd Duck to the menagerie of bath toys at birthday time!

Though cute, this duck had a strong, persistant smell to it and immediately filled with water that we could not get out yucky ducky!

I bought this duck, because I wanted something non toxic for my child. We have the yellow one. The looks are good, however the bottom is not a solid surface; the center part is not glued suficiently on the sides, alowing water in. Before using it I put some silicone in the crack to seal it, so will see, how it will work for us. The duck doesn't float straight. The head is half sank in water very poor design.

Want Boon Odd Duck Discount?

I was looking forward to the Boon Odd Duck, but now realize it's packaging has to improve. While it uses a clamshell design, the bottom of the duck was exposed to the elements. Mine arrived dirtied, damaged & the bottom orange circular plastic was about to fall off. My kid's prying fingers would have just finished the job and pulled that part off the main body of the duck with ease. Why they designed it in this way for a rubber toy is beyond me. Plus the orange circular plastic was just held together with what appears to be glue.

Furthermore the duck appeared discolored & 'used'. I am very disappointed with this product.

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Smart Screen Laptop

Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Smart Screen LaptopI bought this because my 6month old is obsessed with my laptop. He definitely likes it, bangs on the keys and has enough different settings for it to not get too repetitive or boring. The main reason I did not give it high stars was the ability to open and close it. He likes that almost more than playing with the buttons. The only problem is he keeps shutting it on his fingers. Just shutting it isn't enough to hurt him, but he leans on it for support crushing his fingers.

My 14-month-old grandson is obsessed with our real laptops. Loves to bang on a real keyboard and see images on the screen. The FP Smart Screen Laptop was worth the money; he loves to open and close it and hit all the keys, while enjoying the music. He's too young to really be learning anything. Teaches numbers in Spanish as well, which is a bonus. Works fine after being dropped many times. He still prefers our real laptops, but this gives him a chuckle for a few minutes.

We bought this for our grandchild when he stays the weekend with us. He was 10 mos. when we purchased it, he is now one and still loves it. He was always coming over and hitting the keys on our laptop and also on his daddy's lap top who works from home. Now he has his own laptop and he does the same thing, but the laptop responds back to him depending on the key or keys hit and so he plays with it for 30 minutes or more. He loves to open and close it to hear the all the different responses. Quite often he will play with it in bed at night until he falls asleep. I think this is a great toy for mimicking our daily lifestyle since we must use the computer for work at home. He thinks he is doing the same thing and leaves our laptops and us alone for a good amount of time so that we can work from home with less interruptions. I highly recommend this toy, it stimulates the child for a longer then normal amount of time and it is very educational at the same time.

Topeak BabySeat Child Bike Seat with Aluminum Rack (Disc Mount Version)

Topeak BabySeat Child Bike Seat with Aluminum RackMy wife and I wanted a child seat that would work on my mountain bike with disc brakes. This rack/seat combination has worked perfectly! The variety of extension brackets included make this rack simple to install on any frame with the pre-drilled mounting holes. All you need is an allen wrench, a screwdriver and a pair of pliers or small crescent wrench. It will also work on a standard (i.e. caliper brake) frame, so why not buy this one in case you decide to go with a disc brake bike in the future? It's big enough for our "oversized" toddler to ride in comfort as well. He loves it, we love it, and we would absolutely recommend it to anyone who's looking for a good child bike seat. It's difficult to find (we came to Amazon after being told we'd have to special order it at REI and pay $45 more). Great product.

This is the old version of the seat. The rack is NOT MTX compatible, unlike the product description at the manufacturer's website. In addition, this has a lower weight limit. I'm really bummed I got this.

Buy Topeak BabySeat Child Bike Seat with Aluminum Rack (Disc Mount Version) Now

I received this about a week ago and last night finally worked up the courage to install it (it was pretty intimidating for someone who doesn't know much about tools)! I don't have disc brakes but the disc-mount version works on either type and plus was the same price. Two hours and a trip to the hardware store later, I think the seat is about as secure as it's gonna get (it feels solid as a rock-very secure and very safe looking). One thing that bothered me though was that the allen wrench needed wasn't included in the box (luckily my next store neighbor had one). The instructions, to me, could have been a little more helpful, but I finally (I think!) figured it out correctly. (Another thing that is bothering me-I don't know why it says you need a screwdriver! I never used one...it seems fine but I will definitely get this checked out by my local bike shop before I use it.) The reason for the trip to the hardware store was that the two longer screws needed for one part of the seat weren't long enough (they were M5 x L25...I bought M5 x L30 and they were perfect). We haven't tried the seat out yet but it looks super comfortable and safe. Once the initial installation is done, it seems great. (My local bike shop said they would install for $25, but I figured I'd try it myself.) All in all, seems like a great product-I'll update if I have any problems after our ride today, but my son seemed to love it during our test-sit and looked snug as a bug in there. 4 stars only because of the installation snags I mentioned earlier.

**UPDATE**

I've been using this for about a week now and my son and I absolutely love it. Have had zero problems so far and I am glad that after (much) deliberation on the kind and brand of bike seat to get, I finally decided on this one. A great quality seat, my son is very comfortable and it's very easy for me to use. Would definitely recommend.

Read Best Reviews of Topeak BabySeat Child Bike Seat with Aluminum Rack (Disc Mount Version) Here

I chose this bike seat because it looked safe, and convenient. Well after the bike having one small fall the plastic clasps that keep the child in place broke instantaneously. Yes thats right, so the bike fell over the clasp broke (making the 3 point harness unusable child fell through the seat and was choked by the strap around neck. Thank goodness we had a helmet on and no scratches on the kid (amazingly) but he was forcefully chocked.

This and of itself is enough to make me suggest that you should not buy this item however their customer support was not helpful either. When I spoke to them about the situation they directed me on where I could buy a replacement part. I think this is poor customer service my concern was first SAFETY. I don't know if I'll do this again. I'm seriously investigating trailers. However, I would have expected that they offer a replacement part free of charge.

Obviously, one hopes the bike never falls over however when it does you expect it to work. This failed.

Even though my bike doesn't have a disc breaks I got this model to future proof my investment. It took me about 2 hours to install the seat, bike stand and rearview mirror (which I have purchased separately). The supplied instructions are pretty good and all the supplied parts fit together very well. I have used this seat couple of times so far with very good experience for both, the rider and the passenger :-). It is easy to put the baby in and out of it. The straps work very well to hold him in the seat. We have not used the foot straps since it seemed uncomfortable to prevent any movement and the way the seat is positioned on the bike and the shape of the foot rests it is hard to put his feet into the wheel. The seat seems to protect the passenger very well and we had a blast with it. I especially like that having him right behind me allows us to talk and share the experience.

TY Beanie Baby - LUKE the Black Lab

TY Beanie Baby - LUKE the Black LabBeanie Babies aren't what they used to be. The quality has been managed out, so I advise to NOT get this toy. Kids love and deserve toys, and there are lots of better quality items available.

Cute little dog. Don't need to potty train it. It is a nice and well constructed dog. He would be a nice gift fo a kid who loves dogs. He has a nice black and white checkered ribbon tied in a bow around it's neck. He is made of a soft black fabric. He is also the right size for little hands.

There are a couple listing of this dog on Amazon, so it would be helpful to search Amazon for "TY Luke" to find the best deal for you.

Earlyears Pound n' Play

Earlyears Pound n' PlayI got this for my son for his first birthday. I looked at several ball pounders, and decided on this one based on the recommendations on this and the others. This one is simple enough for a one year old to be successful pounding the balls through the holes (and he doesn't have to match the colored ball to the colored slot). He seems to really enjoy this toy, and appears to understand the concept of placing the ball in the slot and hammering it through. I have no complaints about this toy, and would easily recommend it for a young toddler. (Just watch out for the occasional hammering on you or your pets.)

This toy is straightforward and fun for a one year old. Teaches hand eye coordination and the hammer and balls are also fun on their own. Your child does not need to color match for the toy to work. Any of the balls can go through any of the holes.

While keeping all four balls with the toy has proved a little squirrelly,my 13-month old loves this toy and it holds his focus much better than many other far more expensive items. It's easy to keep clean with a wipe down and it's versatile in that my son plays with it in different ways (balls through holes with hand, using the hammer, rolling the balls across the wood floors and fishing them out of the plastic box or out of anything else he can drop them in. An excellent choice for a baby with rudimentary motor skills and a passion for plastic hammers!

We purchased this product for my son's first birthday. It is a decent toy, although he received a better toy that essentially does the same thing. The balls on this toy are a little hard for my son to push through the holes at the top. He still does enjoy playing with it, but I would recommend the Fisher-Price Sit Up & Pound Arcade over this toy. The balls are much easier for a one year old to push through the holes and it has fun music each time the balls drop.

We bought this toy for our nine-month-old who likes to beat on things. For that it's super. She does have to hit the balls pretty hard to get them to go through the holes and she isn't so much interested in that yet, but she'll grow into it. I would say to be careful, however, because she has gotten her hand stuck in the hole trying to pull a ball out. She started to whimper and I looked down at her to find that she had shoved her hand into the the hole to pull out a ball and, because she wouldn't let go of the ball, she couldn't get her hand out. The thing is like a raccoon trap! Other than that, however, it's quite good. I love that it's entirely kid-powered with no batteries or obnoxious noises.

Little Fox

Little FoxThe little book contains a number of lovely drawings, but no text after a while it's just not as fun to play with. However, the toy fox superbly made, soft, and very colorful can be used in so many story play-outs. My daughter and I love playing with it.
